Creating Coloring Pages with GIMP

My Coloring Book Editor is only available for Windows.  If you don't have access to a Windows machine, or you just don't want to use MCBEdit, you still need to make sure your pictures are PURE BLACK AND WHITE.

Quick-and-Easy with GIMP

To quickly convert using GIMP 2 follow these steps...

  1. Open the file which you need to convert.
  2. Select Image > Mode > Grayscale from the menu.
  3. Select Image > Mode > Indexed... from the menu.
  4. Choose Use black and white (1-bit) palette.
  5. Click [Convert].
  6. Use the pencil with either black or white only, to make any minor edits that are needed.
  7. Save the file.

More control with GIMP

For more control over the conversion using GIMP 2 follow these steps...

  1. Open the file which you need to convert.
  2. Select Image > Mode > Grayscale from the menu.
  3. Select Tools > Color Tools > Threshold... from the menu.
  4. Move the slider to the left for less black, and to the right for more.  When you are satisfied, click OK.
  5. Select Image > Mode > Indexed... from the menu.
  6. Choose Use black and white (1-bit) palette.
  7. Click [Convert].
  8. Use the pencil with either black or white only, to make any minor edits that are needed.
  9. Save the file.

Testing with GIMP

You can also test your coloring in page in GIMP...

  1. Select Image > Mode > RGB.
  2. Choose a dark color and use the fill tool to check the paint goes only where it should.
    (Be careful not to click on the outlines).
  3. Fix up any little gaps using the pencil tool.
  4. Select Tools > Color Tools > Threshold... from the menu.
  5. Move the slider to the left for less black, and to the right for more.  When you are satisfied, click OK.
  6. Select Image > Mode > Indexed... from the menu.
  7. Choose Use black and white (1-bit) palette.
  8. Click [Convert].
  9. Use the pencil with either black or white only, to make any minor edits that are needed.
  10. Save the file.
